Incredible India – Promoting Domestic Tourism

Summer holidays are back. Its the best time for families to plan for long vacations. But for most Indians domestic vacation holidays are limited to their home state or in the neighbouring states only. People in Tamil Nadu could have visited Ooty or Kodaikanal more than once but still that would be their first choice hill station for another summer vacation too. Forget Shimla or Manali in the North, even the hill stations closer in Central or Western India will not be in their choice.

Yes, cost is a major factor in deciding against travelling long distance. But the point is, even those who can afford to spend are not travelling further from their home state for vacations.

Ads showing beautiful pictures of India are not enough to change this trend. The tourism campaign should aim at changing the mindset of the people to explore the different states of India. May be the campaign should target the kids to explore the India and encourage them to question their parents and play an active part in the holiday decision making at home.

We can’t depend on Government again to do another incredible campaign to boost the domestic tourism. Major domestic tour operators like Cox & Kings, Thomas Cook or leading online travel portals can take the initiative and also add to the campaign with some attractive offers to help boost domestic tourism in India.
