Tailoring chain – Stitching a new business in India

Ready made or custom tailored – What do you prefer? Well, most of us love to wear fit, given a choice. But is there a real choice? Are there enough well run professional tailoring shops in India?

Most of the tailoring shops fail to deliver on time. Sometimes they do not stitch as per the given preferences and thereby damage the whole experience of having a custom tailored dress.

How about a professionally run tailor shop from a big business group that caters to the demands of the customers who are ready to spend the additional amount to have a better tailoring experience. Though few big apparel stores do have in-house tailoring facility there aren’t any stand-alone tailoring chains around.

Will it work? Though most men prefer ready-made garments, still a significant percentage of women prefer to have their salwars and churidars custom tailored. Also when apparel stores like Reliance Trends are selling jeans under Rs 200, charging Rs 200-300 for stitching a salwar will not be a bad business idea. So there is demand and also the business is profitable one.

In these tough economic times, when many textile units are closing down, will any one think different and launch a nation-wide tailoring chain in India?

  1. Dear Siva,

I’m so amazed to read this blog I stumbled upon while researching the custom tailoring chain idea and it’s feasibility.

What you have mentioned is very close to what I got thinking while getting my trouser altered at a tailor shop.

I just would like to acknowledge your efforts in maintaining such a fantastic idea-portal.

    Best Regards,
    Piyush

  2. Thanks Piyush
