Will Chennai Super Kings take IPL T20 to Madurai?

IPL Season 3 is moving to new venues like Dharmasala, Visakhapatnam, Ahmedabad and Nagpur. However all the Chennai Super Kings home matches are to be played only at the Chepauk stadium in Chennai.

Playing all the home matches in a single city is fraught with risks due to unpredictable natural or social events. The opening match of IPL 3 being pushed out of Hyderabad due to Telangana issue is a best example for that. So it’s in best interest for Chennai Super Kings to be ready with an alternate venue for the future IPL tournaments.

With the adjacent states Karnataka and Andhra having their own IPL teams, Royal Challengers and Deccan Chargers and the other state Kerala sharing its borders with Karnataka also, the best option for CSK to get a loyal fan base for their home matches is to lookout for new venues in other cities in Tamil Nadu. Having spent more than 90 million dollars to buy the franchise rights, it’s worth spending another 10-15 million dollars to build a new ground to de-risk and grow their business.

Madurai, the heritage city in Southern Tamil Nadu will be a better option. The city being the constituency of  TN Chief minister Karunanidhi’s son and Union Cabinet Minister M.K.Alagiri, the city administrative officials might be more than willing to help get the IPL Twenty20 cricket extravaganza to the minister’s constituency.

Instead of waiting for BCCI or TNCA to build a new stadium its better for the CSK franchise owners to take the initiative and take IPL to other venues in Tamil Nadu. Will Madurai get a chance?
