World Movies – Action starts in India

International movie in India is all about Hollywood/English movies. There are about half-a-dozen channels – Star Movies, HBO, Pix, Zee Studio, AXN – dedicated to non-Indian language films, but all of them focus only Hollywood movies.

As a welcome change, UTV network recently launched World Movies, India’s first dedicated International movie channel that showcases movies in French, Spanish, Polish, Russian, Japanese, German, Italian and many more with English subtitles.

I like their tagline – “One World. One Channel.” It’s simple yet it clearly communicates the International movie experience, the channel provides. They are active in the Social Media space too. They’ve started World Movies – Orkut community and Facebook group to promote the channel. No wonder they’ve achieved significant TRP ratings in a short time.

However they will be challenged soon in the same space by NDTV, as it also plans to launch its international movie channel, NDTV Lumiere soon. So the action in the World movies space just gets started in India. For the movie buffs in India there’ll be good times ahead.

Oh by the way having subscribed to a Jumbo pack too won’t get you to watch World Movies. Tata Sky offers World Movie channel only in the Add-on package – Lifestyle Gold Pack. Be prepared to spend another Rs.30 per month if you want to enjoy World Movies.
